Taking The Wraps off Celebrity Edge
Article Published: Friday, March 24, 2017
Celebrity Cruises has revealed the first tantalizing glimpse of its newest cruise ship, which will debut next year in the form of Celebrity Edge. Carrying 3,900 passengers, the 117,000-ton ship will represent an entirely new class of vessel for Celebrity. The line calls Celebrity Edge "a transformational ship", unlike anything that's come before it. And, as this first reveal showcased, it's unlike any other cruise ship, period.
"Celebrity Edge is one of the most exciting, innovative and transformational ships I have ever been involved with,” said Richard D. Fain, Chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. "The new features and refined design will establish a new baseline for ships from here on out.”
"Our guests don’t want to just skim the world like a magazine – they want to feel a human connection with it,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO, Celebrity Cruises. “Every element of Celebrity Edge is meant to make that connection intense and unforgettable. Our new class of ship will allow guests to experience their journeys with the uniqueness and sophistication that marks the rest of their lives."
Reinventing the Tender Platform
Perhaps the most wow-inducing aspect of Celebrity Edge is The Magic Carpet. An entirely new take on the traditional tendering platform used when the ship is at anchor, the Magic Carpet is a tender platform that also happens to be one of the most unique features of Celebrity Edge.
Resting on davits that run from Deck 2 at sea level, all the way to Deck 16, the 90-ton Magic Carpet platform can move vertically up and down. At sea level, it is used for tendering. Elsewhere, it takes on a variety of roles, from a raw bar on Deck 5, to a poolside venue on Deck 14, and a changeably-themed specialty restaurant in evenings up on Deck 16.
So can you ride the Magic Carpet while it ascends and descends? Celebrity tells us no. But the fact remains that the line has managed to develop four unique venues within a single platform, from the practical (the tender platform) to the cool (the cantilevered bar, lounge and restaurant.)
You'll be able to instantly spot the Magic Carpet, too: its davits (rails, really) that run along the side of the ship are coloured bright orange, as is the Carpet's superstructure, in early renderings.
A River Cruise Innovation For the Oceans
Celebrity seems to be taking a cue from river cruise lines like Avalon Waterways and Scenic that have long offered wall-to-wall panoramic balconies. Celebrity Edge will offer something similar, though Celebrity will be branding it as an Infinite Balcony.
These Infinite Balcony staterooms will feature French-style doors that open the balcony to the rest of the stateroom, along with an electronic window partition on the balcony that opens and closes with the push of a button. This allows the balcony to become part of the actual stateroom, and gives the occupant the choice of whether or not to open it up to the elements.
While the idea has been used heavily on the rivers of Europe, this will be the first instance of it being deployed on an oceangoing ship – and Celebrity is sure to have a hit on their hands, even with over 900 of these rooms available aboard Celebrity Edge.
More Resort Amenities Give Celebrity the Edge
Expanding on the pool deck concept developed aboard the line's Solstice Class ships, the pool deck aboard Celebrity Edge completely alters the traditional shipboard concept. With six massive cabanas (available at an additional cost), the pool deck includes a large swimming pool along with the usual hot tubs, all of which is flanked by loungers positioned facing the sea. The stylish space will be two decks in height, and will feature walls of glass at every turn.
The ship will also feature its own iteration of the Rooftop Terrace found aboard the line's refitted Millennium Class ships. Dubbed The Rooftop Garden, this space will feature its own dedicated Rooftop Garden Grill and will be the place to be for daytime yoga and other activities. At night, the space will be used for Celebrity's Taste of Film programme that pairs movies and cuisine together.
Of course, with over a year and a half until Celebrity Edge makes its debut, new details about this transformative ship will be announced over the course of the next few months. Considering that these few details are all we know about this new class of ship right now, it's no stretch to say that this is one ship that may well be deserving of the hype surrounding it.
