Project Leonardo: Norwegian Cruise Line’s Next Big Thing

Article Published: Wednesday, March 22, 2017

Norwegian Cruise Line has come a long way in the past few decades, building big ships that are innovative and unique. Now, the line is preparing to embark on the latest chapter in its storied history, unveiling details of its newest class of ship: Project Leonardo.

The first images of this brand-new class of ship was shown last week at Seatrade Cruise Global in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. While exact details were scarce at this early stage, the line did confirm that it has four firm orders placed with Italy's Fincantieri Shipyard, plus options for two additional vessels.

The four firm ships will be delivered between 2022 and 2025. The 140,000 ton vessels will carry 3,300 guests apiece. Exact names have yet to be announced.

Norwegian did announce that all four vessels are being designed from the ground-up to be highly efficient and environmentally responsible. This will allow Norwegian to deploy them to areas with strict emissions controls, like the Pacific Coast of North America, Alaska, and Northern Europe.

Building on the flexibility and freedom of choice that Norwegian introduced back in 2001 when it debuted Freestyle Cruising, these new Project Leonardo ships will build on the unique style that Norwegian has carved for itself in recent newbuilds: large, mainstream ships that elevate the décor and passenger offerings to levels more commonly seen on premium lines.

The line hinted that future announcements revealing the ship's public rooms, amenities and accommodations will be forthcoming.  However, it's fair to bet that suites, balcony staterooms, and Norwegian's much-lauded Studio Staterooms designed exclusively for solo travellers will return on these new Project Leonardo ships.

With five years until the first Project Leonardo ship is delivered, expect Norwegian Cruise Line to build up the anticipation of these new vessels over the weeks and months to come.
