Fernandina Beach - located on Amelia Island, the northernmost barrier island of Florida - is a historic bay-side town which boasts a 50-square-block area of gorgeous Victorian, Queen Anne, and Italianate homes listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The town of Fernandina Beach dates from the post-Civil War period. In the late 19th century, Amelia Island's timber, phosphate, and naval-stores industries boomed. Back then, the town was an active seaport, with 14 foreign consuls in residence. You'll see (and occasionally smell) the paper mills that still stand near the small seaport here. The island experienced another economic explosion in the 1970s and 1980s, when real-estate developers built condominiums, cottages, and two big resorts on the island's southern end. In recent years, Fernandina Beach has seen another big boom, this time in bed-and-breakfast establishments.

You'll recall sunning and strolling on a seemingly endless white sand beach. Or relaxing in the shade of coconut palms. You'll remember the crystal-clear water and the multicolored tropical fish. And you'll certainly recollect the graceful gestures of the uniformed "bobbies" directing traffic in the bustling downtown. Nassau will delight you in many ways. With its colorful Colonial architecture. With the warmth of its people. And with the infectious music of steel drums. It's very likely you'll leave this happy place with lots of duty-free gifts and mementos and at least one straw hat.

La Horta, Azores

Some say the Azores are a remnant of lost Atlantis, and some say they sprang from flowers dropped by an angel. Neither theory seems preposterous during the drive from sea level up to mile-wide volvanic crater rimmed with lush greenery and brilliant flowers. Looking out to sea, you may glimpse Capelinhos, the volcano that rose from the Atlantic only four decades ago.

The nine mountainous islands of the Azores were long a haven for Atlantic traders and explorers sailing between the Old and New Worlds. On the green and fertile island of Sao Miguel, Ponta Delgada was once no more than a fishing village. 16th and 17th century economic growth saw the construction of lavish palaces and churches of the period, many still surviving. Not to be missed are the twin crater lakes of Sete Cidades, just a causeway apart, but the one blue, the other green.

Portugal’s capital is an 18th-century city - elegant, open to the sea and carefully planned. Most places of interest are within easy walking distance. Rossio Square, the heart of Lisbon since medieval times, is an ideal place to start exploring. Many rebuilt houses with original façades provide stores and restaurants with modern interiors. High above Baixa is Bairro Alto - with its teeming nightlife. There are many monuments and museums, such as San Jeronimos Monastery, Royal Coach Museum and Gulbenkian Museum. Two well-known landmarks are the Monument to the Discoveries and the Tower of Belem. A statue of Christ looms above Europe’s longest suspension bridge. Madragoa, Bica and Bairro Alto, Lisbon’s older sections, offer a variety of sights: the Church of Sao Roque, with its beautiful tiles; St. George Castle, which offers a splendid view from its location above the Alfama quarter; the botanical gardens, featuring an unusual, cold greenhouse; and the cathedral, stunning with its Moorish design. Renowned Gulbenkian Museum is the cultural center of Portugal.
