|
Bijagos Archipelago's stream of 88 islands rest off the West-African Coast, with the majority of these tropical lands uninhabited. Home to a diverse myriad of wildlife, including saltwater hippos, five of the world’s eight species of tortoises, and about 96 species of migratory birds, the Bijagos (Bissagos) are far removed and off the beaten path. The islands offer a look into the indigenous customs of a matriarchal society, where local life remains relatively untouched by the outside world. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve provides a variety of environments to explore and discover an untamed wilderness. Clear beaches give visitors the unique experience of being removed from society. Meet the local people as you walk through villages and savor local cuisine.

This small capital has a sleepy ambience reminiscent of a large village. Banjul is also a port city acting as a funnel for a large amount of imported goods. Many of these imported goods find their way to Albert Market, a great place to start leisurely walking and shopping for local crafts, batiks, silver jewellery clothes, shoes, fruits and vegetables, and household goods. Look out for the War Memorial and Fountain, MacCarthy Square, African Heritage Centre, National Museum of the Gambia, July 22 Arch. Local pirogues ferry visitors on the quiet waterways of Oyster Creek.
