Flatey Island is located in the Breidafjordur on the west coast of Iceland. Here you will find an abundance of birds - Arctic terns, red-throated divers, and black guillemots. Watch the seas for the minke, humpback, and orca whales that frequent these waters.

Vigur Island is small but significant, as the second largest island within the ice-fjord it occupies, Isafjordur. This narrow 70-mile-long channel across the southernmost tip of Greenland is breathtakingly dramatic. Huge glaciers tumble down towards the rugged coast from the Greenland ice cap-exactly the kind of scene that inspired one Greenlandic poet to declare: 'I get dizzy of all this beauty'. A thousand years ago, just north of here at Narsarsuaq, Eric the Red established his farm amid 6,000-foot mountains and glaciers.

Nanortalik means 'place of bears'. It is Greenland's southernmost town, the district border extends all the way from the island Qeqertarsuaq, north west of Alluitsup Paa to the Cape Farewell area and to the 60 kilometers long Lindenow Fjord in East Greenland. The area is approx. 15,000 square kilometers.

The most renowned feature in the area is the Nanortalik skyscrapers - the steep peaks and sheer mountain walls lining the Tasermiut Fjord, Pamiagdluk, Prins Christianssund and Lindenow Fjord. Names like Ketil Mountain and Ulamertorsuaq are well known to most rock and mountain climbers in the world. The mountains in this area are just as challenging as the Alps and only experienced climbers should give it a go.

The sealhunters move to the outermost islands in the spring to hunt the big hooded seal, because the seals' migratory route passes through these islands along with the field ice. Here, the hunter culture remains unspoilt for many generations. The supply for summer and winter is prepared on the islands.

The place got its name, Nanortalik, because the polar bears drift by on big ice floes in the field ice from East Greenland. Each year several polarbears are spotted in the area, but they are of no danger to the inhabitants.

In the spring and in the late summer the waters surrounding the municipality are filled with whales, of which the most frequent is the minke whale.

Hvalsey is the site of Greenland's largest, best preserved Norse ruins. History enthusiasts will be interested in the archaeological history of the region and will want to visit Hvalsey Church, built by Viking settlers, before their disappearance from Greenland in the 15th Century. The church itself is located on a beautiful green hill surrounded by picturesque mountains.

Qaqortoq means "The White Place", and the town is the educational and cultural center of Southern Greenland. The sheep farms give this part of Greenland special character. Qaqortoq has a sculpture park "Stone and Man" made by 18 Nordic sculptors. The result is 24 sculptures and reliefs spread all over town. Greenland's only public fountain is in the town square. The square is the historical part of town, with many buildings from colonial times and a museum concentrating on Greenlandic culture, the Norse period and the history of Qaqortoq. Close to the square is "Brædtet" market where local fishermen and hunters sell the days catch. There are 2 churches in town; "Frelserens" from 1832 and "Gertrud Raschs" from 1973. "Frelserens" hans the lifebuoy and memorial tablet with the names of those missing from M/S Hans Hedtoft, which went down in January 1959. "Gertrud Raschs" has one of Greenlands most beautiful altar pieces made by artist Maria Haagen-Müller.

Greenland, the planet’s biggest island, offers one of the world’s most tranquil and beautiful landscapes one can imagine. South Greenland is famous for its verdant hills contrasted by icebergs, friendly locals and fascinating Viking ruins. In Brattahlid visitors can visit the reconstructed home of the first viking to settle in Greenland, Erik the Red.

Nuuk was founded by the unfailingly optimistic Hans Egede - the Danish missionary with soul-conversions on his mind - who promptly named the settlement Good Hope. Today Nuuk is small by modern standards, with a total population of only 14,000. Despite a wealth of land and a paucity of people, Nuuk has insisted on housing the population in immense apartment blocks with imaginative names like Blok P - a kind of Gulag on ice - and the urban sprawl is now spreading out along the road to the airport. Kolonihavnen is a pleasant exception to the rest of Nuuk's Lego-city look: it's a picturesque 18th-century fishing village in the heart of Nuuk and gives some idea of what the town looked like before the industrial harbour was built. Nuuk's real attraction lies in its proximity to any number of excellent day hikes into the hinterland and the fabulous views from the tops of the nearby mountains. Organised tours, boat trips and the rental of equipment is easier from the capital.

Sisimiut is a growing town located in western Greenland. It is one of the main village destinations in Greenland, and an administrative center for the Qeqqata Municipality. The population of Sisimiut was recorded of 5,598 inhabitants living in the town in 2013. One of the main attractions is the multicolor Northern Lights of the Aurora Borealis that take place during the months of September to April. Aside from this amazing phenomenon, many visitors come to Sisimiut to enjoy activities such as fishing, hiking, and dog sledding. 

Ilulissat means icebergs in Greenlandic, and the town has a beautiful location at the mouth of an ice fjord that is filled with enormous icebergs, and is the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere. North of Ilulissat lies the settlement of Oqaatsut/Rodebay, where some of the old buildings from colonial times are today restaurants or huts available for rent. Ilulissat is a modern town but is also know as the dogsled town for all its sleds and snow dogs, and visitors can share in the sledding fun.

 Disko Island is famous for its huge basalt mountains, and the highest peaks on the west coast are found near Uummannaq. The cliffs are home to spectacular colonies of seabirds, and the whole coast is busy with glaciers and ice fields. Some of the world's most productive and fast-moving glaciers are to be seen here.

Uummannaq Island is located 590 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in northwestern Greenland. Uummannaq has been host to unique events such as the Ice Golf Championship, Greenland Shark Challenge and the National Championship in Kayaking. Attractions of Uummannaq include archaeological and historical sites such as the Qilakitsoq mummies - an ancient Eskimo burial site where 500 year old mummies were discovered or settlements of the hunter/trapper culture. Also of interest are dog sled trips, whales, bird cliffs, glaciers, a museum and, of course, May to July this is the land of the midnight sun.
