Seabourn: Seabourn Sojourn

Also known as Grand Canary, Las Palmas in the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands. During Christopher Columbus’ 1492 voyage of discovery, he was forced to pull his ships into Grand Canary to make repairs to the “Pinta”. During three subsequent voyages, he stopped again in the Canary Islands on his voyage of discovery. During the late fifteenth century, the city of Las Palmas was established by the Spanish in the heart of a lush palm grove. It is today the largest city in the archipelago as well as one of Spain’s leading ports.

One of the smaller Canary Islands, La Gomera is best known for being Christopher Columbus’ residence prior to his discovering the Americas. His 15th century house is now a museum open to the public. In the seaside resort of Valle Gran Rey, one can sit in shore front restaurants, sample the local cuisine and enjoy the views of Tenerife. La Palma is the most western of the Canary Islands — and probably the greenest. Over seventy percent of the island is a natural preserve. La Palma has an abundance of wild plants and wild flowers, many of which only occur on La Palma, or only on the Canary islands.. For the adventurous, there are national parks with miles and miles of hiking trails to explore. Hike along the coast, through forests and up mountain peaks of up to 8,000 feet. Madeira has been described as "Island of Eternal Spring". It is renowned for its wine, which many feel ranks among the world’s best. A small and relatively little visited island off the south-east coast of Madeira, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Morocco. Cadillac is located in the Gironde commune of the Aquitaine region in southwestern France.  The town was founded in 1280 by Lord Jean I de Grailly whose lush land grew renown vineyards of sweet green and tannin red grapes. The neighboring and competitive towns such as Bordeaux and Sauternes also harvest sweet wines. The seaport of the city of Oporto (Porto), Leixoes provides easy access into the city, which is famous for its port wine. Gibraltar is the famous promontory located at the western entrance of the Mediterranean, with Spain to the north and, across the Straits, Morocco to the south. The Straits are a channel connecting the Atlantic with the Mediterranean. Africa is clearly visible on a fine day. In ancient times, the Rock, as Gibraltar is popularly called, and its counterpart on the African side, Mount Abyla, were known as the Pillars of Hercules. Barcelona, the self-confident and progressive capital of Spain, is a tremendous place to be.
